“Kamakshi amman” sits in Padmasana posture which resembles the lotus flower. She has one sugarcane bow within her hand and parrot within the other hand. The parrot is the symbol of love. The Chandraperai shines within her forehead. She is beautiful and divine. Mata Kamakshi is Parabrahmaswarupini. The divine Sri Chakram is installed infront of the idol. ‘Ka’ means Mata Saraswati. ‘Ma’ means Mahalakshmi. ‘Akshi’ means eye. The name Kamakshi means she who lives within Kanchi with Mata Saraswati and Mahalakshmi as her eyes. Devi Kamakshi is said to have worshipped one Shivalinga made of mud under the mango tree to please Lord Mahadeva. Shankara became the river Kamba with high tides to test Devi Kamakshi. She clasped the idol closely and didn’t allow it to errode. She did penance there to please Mahadeva. She sat within the needle tip posture and fire surrounded her from side. Lord Mahadeva was one day pleased with her and came infront of her. He married her and from that day Mata Kamakshi lives within the sacred city of Kanchipuram. Mata Kamakshi fulfills the wishes of her devotees and blesses her devotees.
